The Navy is betting big on new ships in its fiscal year 2026 budget, requesting 19 be procured this year alone. This is a massive increase over previous years and underscores how far behind military leaders feel we are.

There is one major problem, though: we can barely build the ships we've ordered years ago. Major programs, such as the Virginia and Columbia class submarines, are years behind schedule, and costs are soaring.

Despite increased funding for shipbuilding, achieving a 350-ship navy seems less and less likely, so let's talk about it.

Israel's strikes on Iran, Operation Rising Lion, were an all-out blitz on Iranian air defenses from inside and above the country. With well-placed Spike missile systems, drones launched from trucks, standoff munitions, and electronic warfare, Israel shut down Iran's air defenses in mere hours. This paved the way for non-stealth 4th generation fighters like the F-15 and F-16 to use JDAMs on targets deep inside Iran, including in the capital city.

In this we break down how this was accomplished, what it allowed Israeli jets to do, and how this is another example of how vulnerable major systems are to relatively low-tech attacks.
