Farm Life

Spraying day. We finished planting 48 hours ago, so now the focus shifts to getting our pre-emerge herbicide down before the rain we're hoping for Sunday. I'm hauling water and chemical south to Dad, who's the spray guy around here.
I also walked out and showed you just how dry this ground actually is, because I'm tired of the "farmers drench everything in chemicals" comments. The reality looks a little different when you're standing in the dust.
Plus: how the sprayer controls every individual nozzle, we sold 25,000 bushels of corn, and we swapped a fresh set of wheels onto Onyx's truck.

9:58 Idea: 20 questions with Dad — what should I ask?

Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 6th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture. With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

Just How Poisonous Are Farm Chemicals?!

Millennial Farmer June 9, 2026 7:00 pm

Planting 2026 is officially in the ground. The last day is always a little bittersweet — planting's my favorite thing to do — but I'd rather have the seed growing than sitting in crates in the shop.
This one also covers a field that's new to us. I picked up about 107 acres over the winter, and somebody in the comments figured that meant I must be out undercutting my neighbors to get it. So I told the whole story of how it actually happened — because that's not how we do things, and it never has been. Plus the last seed-tender fill of the year, the downforce automation reading a field different than I expected, and the new herd at home.

0:00 Morning chores & the co-op drops the seed
0:25 Last seed-tender fill of the year
1:03 Moving planter parts (old IRDs up for grabs)
2:07 Someone dumped their garbage in our field approach
3:33 Swapping chemical totes & the new sprayer sun shade
3:59 Splitting up: Dad sprays, Onyx tills, I load the planter
5:36 Why a good seed tender is worth it
5:57 White mold scores — which beans go first
7:13 The new field, and the comment that called me a land grabber
10:10 Downforce automation reads this field different
12:01 106.49 acres done
12:26 The final field — roots, rocks, and a cleaned-up ditch
15:02 Done — planted for 2026
15:51 Home for the night
16:36 Checking the new herd & the chickens
