Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 6th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture. With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

It's Not All Good

Millennial Farmer September 9, 2026 8:36 pm

We picked up a tile plow this year. This was the first real day of running it, in Doug's field, with Colton from Midwest Machinery and Luke from Rust Sales walking us through the software. We made it about thirty feet before we found the first rock.

Back at home there was supposed to be a concrete crew pouring the apron around the big shed. That got pushed, then unpushed while I was a mile down the road and couldn't do anything about it either way.

Also in this one: a stringer cart that wouldn't run, five volts where there should have been twelve, and — surprising nobody — a battery.

Corn is dry and starting to show it. Beans look good. Harvest isn't far off.

Chapters (shift by ~20 seconds if you use the recut open)
0:00 Thirty feet
0:30 What's supposed to happen today
0:48 Swapping the boot from 5-inch to 6-inch
3:33 Eight guys and no concrete
5:22 The corn needs rain
5:51 Five volts at the solenoid
6:34 I leave Friday and I'm gone ten days
8:02 It was a battery
9:07 Doug's field and where the pipe has to go
10:21 That's as far as we got
11:14 Going around it instead of through it
12:32 Volkswagen. School bus.
15:26 How the survey actually works
17:27 Who builds what: Rust Sales and the software side
18:57 Minimum, ideal, and maximum depth
20:50 The concrete trucks showed up after all
22:07 Next day, and the big pour
22:55 Last truck
