It was 31 degrees this morning, six days before June, and we've got corn an
inch and a half tall and soybeans just breaking through. We don't know yet
how bad the damage is — corn will probably push through its own dead leaves,
but the bean cotyledons are a real concern. It'll take a day or two to know.
In between checking the crop, we hauled the last of the soybeans, chased a
grindy noise around a semi for an hour (it was the fifth wheel plate), and
caught up on what the China soybean situation actually looks like right now.
The White House announced $17 billion in ag purchases — no contract behind
it yet, but the markets liked it.

0:00 It froze last night. It's almost June.
0:45 Morning chores, fresh chicks
2:14 Important meeting (it was a haircut)
2:55 Hauling out the last of the soybeans
3:48 Getting the sump saver out of the bin
6:11 Sponsor
7:34 Dad's grindy truck noise — diagnosis time
9:08 I can smell brake
10:38 Grease everything in the right front
11:46 Maybe it's the rear axle?
12:21 It's the fifth wheel plate
13:45 A lot of hoopla for nothing (which is good)
15:42 What dad found out in the field
16:31 Corn froze three out of the last 10 years
17:46 The growing point is below the soil
18:48 The soybeans are a bigger concern
20:16 The China soybean market right now
22:00 The $17 billion handshake
23:16 There's still a market

TerraClear flew our fields with drones, mapped every rock by size, and sent
out a machine that picks them in the most efficient order. The neighbor field
has 2,140 rocks — about 19 hours of work. This one has 96 rocks that are 12
inches or bigger. We let the machine handle those while we hauled the first
loads of corn of the season.

They're also getting into weed identification — drone-scouting for giant
ragweed and water hemp, with full identification rolling out for the 2027
season. That's a real shift in what scouting looks like.

The day ended with a storm we mostly missed, a track meet that got cancelled,
and one truck tire that was 70lb low on pressure.

0:00 2,140 rocks and a map full of dots
0:55 Heading to the field where the rock robot's working
1:34 21 big rocks, or 738 smaller ones — your choice
3:23 The neighbor field: 2,140 rocks, 19 hours
4:11 How bad were the rocks 156 years ago?
4:46 Watching the machine pick a few
6:22 Drone weed identification — what's coming next
8:14 My honest take after working with them for years
9:24 Sponsor
10:48 First corn load — Glenwood instead of Benson
11:37 Transferring corn between bins
13:08 Storm rolling in
13:23 Truck tire repair
15:08 Track meet cancelled too
15:53 Why I have an electric tarp
16:48 14.5% moisture — right on the line
17:16 The storm catches us

Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 6th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture. With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.
